Direct seeding of rice is recently progressing in Japan. Lodging will be serious problem in the direct seeding because Japanese high quality rice cultivars are susceptible to lodging. Moreover, activity of root system in late growth stage plays a key role in grain yield. We grew a Japanese high quality rice cultivar, Kinu-hikari, in Shin-tone Ibaraki in 1996. No-till dry seeding, tilled dry seeding, water seeding and transplanting plots were prepared. Then we measured lodging resistance and bleeding rate from the cut end of stems base at the late grain filling stage(Table 1). The relationships between these root functions and root distribution patterns will be discussed.
